First Photo

I am taking the plunge and have set up a blog about my photo journery.  I decided that it was time to truly learn how to use my camera and start taking photos.  I found a great book entitled BetterPhoto Basics by Jim Miotke.  He writes in a way that I understand!  One of the assignments was to take photos of flowers.  Well - it is cold and the flowers haven't bloomes so I went to the store and bought some gerbera daisies and took them out on my front porch.  I took lots of photos and this is one that I like.  There are problems with it but this is a learning process.  Let me know what you think.  I appreciate constructive criticism! Shutter speed - 1/25; Aperture - F/7.1; Focal length 55mm; ISO 100

  1. I really like how the flower is in focus but the background isn't. It looks beautiful, gerbera daises are my favorite flower (and my wedding flower). :)

  2. Very nice picture. You could also try using your telephoto lens and using a focal length of 2 or 300 with a larger aperture (4.0 or 2.8 if the lens can do it). That would blur the background even more. Another effect I like to play with when shooting flowers is converting them to black and white, especially using the infrared filter in Photoshop.

  3. I love the colors! Beautiful flower! One critique I have is in composition. The flower is really centered. For a more dynamic look try using the thirds rule. Divide your viewfinder into thirds and place you focal point on one of those lines. Then with the advice from Jason, you see a little more background to distort and manipulate! Great job!
